App icon
Michael Flarup
Alpenglow's app icon was designed by Michael Flarup, the Copenhagen-based designer behind Pixel Resort, Apply Pixels, and The iOS App Icon Book. The icon has anchored the app's identity across every platform it has shipped on.
Forecast data
Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD)
Alpenglow's own forecast model is built on high-resolution data from the ICON weather model, produced and published as open data by Deutscher Wetterdienst, Germany's national meteorological service.
SunsetWX
For nearly a decade, from the first release in 2016 until the in-house model went live in early 2026, Alpenglow's forecasts were powered by SunsetWX and its NAM- and GFS-based model. Alpenglow would not exist without them.
Maps
Apple Maps
Maps in the sun direction calculator are provided by Apple Maps via MapKit JS.
Open-source software & data
SunCalc
Sun position, sunrise and sunset times, and golden hour and blue hour windows on this site are calculated with SunCalc by Vladimir Agafonkin, released under the BSD-2-Clause license.
GeoNames
The city database behind the forecast, sun times, and sun direction pages is derived from GeoNames (via the cities.json package), licensed under CC BY 4.0.
OpenStreetMap contributors
Time zone lookups use tz-lookup, built on the Timezone Boundary Builder dataset, which is derived from OpenStreetMap data. © OpenStreetMap contributors.
